Prince Frederick is Calvert County's seat, and much of its housing is fairly new — Census Bureau survey estimates put the median year built at 2002. A heated floor under bathroom or kitchen tile makes a cold room comfortable. Because it needs a power supply, it also brings in Calvert County's electrical permit rules. Calvert County says interior-alteration electrical work requires an electrical permit submitted by a licensed master electrician, and only a state-licensed master electrician registered with the county can pull one. The county says the building permit covers only the structure; electrical work is permitted separately.
So on a heated floor, the electrician pulls the electrical permit, and we coordinate the electrician, any inspections, and the tile so nothing gets covered before it's signed off. Calvert's county staff do the inspections. The county doesn't offer same-day inspections, but it says it's one of the few Maryland counties with next-day inspections. We book them so the tile setter isn't waiting.
New plank, hardwood, or tile over a sound subfloor doesn't involve any electrical work. If damaged subfloor or joists turn up, structural repair goes through the county, and we file it through the Encompass portal.
