A basement that takes on water has to be fixed before it's finished. Calvert County treats basement waterproofing — sealants, drains, and sometimes a sump pump to collect and redirect water — as its own permit work type, separate from finishing.
That matters for timing. Under Calvert's expedited review program, which started September 1, 2026, basement waterproofing outside the Critical Area is eligible for the faster review. Basement finishing is not. So if your basement needs both, we can plan to get the waterproofing permitted and done first while the finishing permit goes through standard review.
Calvert's basement finishing work type needs a building permit, an electrical permit submitted by a licensed master electrician, and a plumbing-gas permit submitted by a licensed master plumber for any plumbing or gas work. County staff do the inspections. The county doesn't offer same-day inspections, but it offers next-day inspections, and we book them so the job keeps moving.
