Great Mills grew up along the Great Mills Road corridor, between Lexington Park and Leonardtown, and county planners pointed to the age of many of its buildings in a 2015 planning draft for the area. Davis Construction & Home Improvement has replaced windows and doors throughout Great Mills, and on an older house the frame around the window matters as much as the glass.

Insert or full-frame?

There are two ways to replace a window. An insert replacement sets a new window inside the existing frame. It's faster and leaves the interior trim alone, and it works well when the old frame is square, solid, and dry.

A full-frame replacement takes the window out down to the rough opening — sash, frame, and trim — and installs a complete new unit. It costs more, but it's the right call when the sill is soft, the frame is rotted, or water has been getting in around the old unit. It's also the only way to see and fix damage hiding behind the old frame.

We check every opening before we price the job, and if we find rot, you'll see it and hear the price before we fix it.

Doors on older houses

The same goes for exterior doors. A door that sticks, drags, or lets daylight through is often a frame or threshold problem, not just a door problem. A pre-hung replacement brings a new frame, threshold, and weatherstripping with it.

Permits

Replacing in the existing opening is the simple case. If a job grows into structural repair of the wall framing or a bigger opening, that goes through a St. Mary's County building permit from Land Use & Growth Management, tracked in eTRAKiT, with inspections by MDIA. We handle it.
